GMT LATHE CHUCK CASE STUDY

CUSTOMER                        : EPE Process Filters & Accumulators Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad

COMPONENT                     : Accumulator (Top Cover & Bottom Cover)

OPERATION                       : Turning, Facing and Grooving.

DIMENSIONS OF THE COMPONENT: OUTER DIAMETER-105mm&THICKNESS -75 mm

REQUIRED ACCURACY:  Face out and OD run out (Ovality) after machining using our chuck should be within 0.3 mm. Note: *OD -outside diameter

CUSTOMER’S  REQUIREMENT:

A lathe chuck with which the manual truing time can be eliminated (Centering with dial gauge for each component before actual machining on CNC lathe)

Based on drawings and the video below sent by the customer, initially, GMT recommended a 3B 254 UBLC Lathe Chuck (Universal Ball Chuck Chuck) with guide pad and 1 set of special jaws with HSS insert and 1 set of three rest piecesand rest rings, support pin and 1 set of spring-loaded Aligner to hold component. This component required rigid clamping to get the desired runout. In addition, the clamping force could not be reduced to meet the component requirement with the non-GMT cylinder used by the customer.

OUR SOLUTION:

GMT conducted trials of batches of 5 to 10 Nos in each with the UBLC.

The runout on the component OD was in the range of 0.3mm to 1mm, but the Face-out was in the range of 0.1mm to 0.5mm. The customer had not indicated the face-out limits in either their initial drawings or the video. So, we were unaware of the requirement.Further, the ovality observed in the blanks supplied by the customer was already at 0.2mm / 0.5mm.

This highlights the importance of initially sending us correct and complete data to reduce the turnaround time from receipt of enquiry to final proposal and then trials. Please send us the correct inspected and duly approved component blanks for trials!

After several iterations, over the course of several trials, GMT recommended a 4B 250 PHNC Lathe Chuck with special jaws, rest and orientation pieces and an 80Ф CH-S Cylinder. The GMT Hydraulic Cylinder had to be used, as the customer’s existing cylinder could not meet the required pressure to operate the jaws.

Trials were conducted in 4B 250 PHNC Chuck with special jaws and 80Ф CH-S Cylinder up to 15 Nos of (Top Cover & Bottom Cover). The customer bought this unit and was very happy with the results after commissioning.Fig. 2 on the left shows the solution, with the component clamped in the chuck.

Fifteen  components were machined and the runout (Ovality) in component the OD was observed within 0.4mm, which was acceptable to the customer.
